I built a new garage over the summer and the only thing I still need to do is run gas and electric from the house to the garage. Seems pretty simple right? Well it’s really not. My local building inspector informs me that I’ll need to dig a 3′ deep trench from the house to the garage in order to get the required 18″ separation between the gas and electric lines. I know gas and electric don’t play nice so I set out this past weekend to get started on Operation Trench.
The conventional trenching method
The Problem
Digging that trench was going to take some serious work. At first I started out using the conventional method of using a regular garden shovel to dig out the trench and cut through any roots I came across. This proved difficult because the soil was hard and a magnolia tree is located close by so roots were pretty plentiful. The 90 degree weather made the whole situation even worse. I thought to myself “there has got to be an easier way to dig this trench.” The conventional method was going to be the death of me.
The Mantis Tiller did most of the work for me.
The Solution
Sitting in my newly built garage was my savior. A machine that I have used time and time again with much success and enjoyment, the Mantis garden tiller. Once I fired up the little red wonder and started tilling that trench was all but done. The Mantis softened up the hard dirt and cut through roots like butter. After the soil was tilled all I had to do was shovel it out and repeat. A back-breaking job turned out to be a walk in the park.
Operation Trench is complete!
The Verdict
Operation Trench was a complete success. The Mantis tiller really saved the day. I highly recommend everyone pick up one of these machines. It always amazes and doesn’t disappoint. You can order one from the Amazon here.
