The makers of the MagicJack internet phone device have caused quite a stir at CES 2010 in Las Vegas. Their new version will allow you to make free calls on your cellphone while you’re at home. This new device works just a mini cellphone tower. Simply plug the MagicJack into your computer (broadband connection required) and if you’re within 8′ of the device it’ll route your call itself, over the internet. By routing your cellphone call using MagicJack you bypass your carrier, no minutes are charged to your cellular account. Pretty slick right?

Any phone that uses the GSM standard is able to take advantage of this new version of MagicJack, namely AT&T and T-Mobile users. Sadly, most phones from Verizon and Sprint Mobile won’t be able to connect to the device.

The new version of MagicJack goes on sale in the Spring and will cost $40. I’m very interested in how the cellular carriers are going to react to this. They tend not to play nice.
