Looking Good!

We’ve always been a big fan of the upside-down planter commonly known as the Topsy Turvy. As you can see from this pic, our Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter is doing rather well. It’s been two months since we first planted it and we’re happy with the results. No tomatoes as of yet but it shouldn’t take too much longer. We decided to go with Rutgers Heirloom tomatoes. They have a great taste and slice really well. I think we’ll plant some cherry tomatoes for round two.

Here’s some quick tips to make sure you get the most out of your Topsy Turvy Planter:

  • Use a good soil mix and be sure to include a 1/2 cup of slow release fertilizer. Use another 1/2 cup of water soluble fertilizer every two weeks. When plants are mature you’ll need to fertilize them every few days.
  • Place the tomato plant root ball as far up inside the planter as possible. This will ensure a strong root system as tomatoes develop roots along their entire stem.
  • Water often! I can’t stress this enough. Tomatoes are 85% water. The Topsy Turvy tends to dry out very easily. Wet, dry, wet, dry watering will lead to blossom end rot. Keeping your tomatoes watered should be your #1 priority.
  • Start your tomatoes as early in the spring (after last frost) as possible.
  • If you want lots of tomatoes then don’t trim your plant at all. The tomatoes will be smaller but there will be more of them. The opposite is true if you want larger tomatoes.
  • Tomatoes don’t do well in extended periods of high temperatures. If it’s hot in your area (85-90 degrees) for more than 10 days in a row, your plants may not blossom. Give them some shade for part of the day.

If you follow these helpful hints you’ll be well on your way to enjoying vine-ripened tomatoes courtesy of the Topsy Turvy Tomato Planter. If you’re interested in trying out the Topsy Turvy then check out the official site .
